William Byrd III as a Child
A young William Byrd III, draped in cloth, holds a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. An African American boy, probably an enslaved member of the household, stands near Byrd and holds the tip of the arrow. This eighteenth-century portrait has been attributed to Charles Bridges, the first documented painter to live and work in Virginia and to produce work of good quality.
