A Proclamation by John Blair
This March 4, 1768 proclamation by John Blair, president of the governor's Council in colonial Virginia, announces the death of Lieutenant Governor Francis Fauquier in the Williamsburg weekly newspaper, the Virginia Gazette. Fauquier had been acting governor, serving for years under an absentee governor. Blair further proclaimed that he would be taking over Fauquier's position and that he would maintain "all Magistrates and Officers, both civil and military" in their posts.
