James Mason

James Mason, who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1837–1839), as a U.S. senator (1847–1861), and as the Confederate envoy to Britain and France during the Civil War, is the subject of this glass-plate portrait made by Mathew Brady. Mason was the grandson of George Mason, co-author of the Bill of Rights.
