The Freedmen’s Bureau.

An engraving from the July 25, 1868, edition of Harper's Weekly depicts an agent from the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands standing between armed groups of southern whites and African Americans. The federal agency was established in 1865 to protect the rights of the newly freed enslaved population in the South.
