Virtual Tour of Bacon’s Castle

This is a virtual tour of Bacon's Castle, a three-story Jacobean-style edifice thought to be the oldest brick house still standing in the former British colonies of North America. The Surry County residence, built in the 1660s by a prosperous planter named Arthur Allen, was originally known as Allen's Brick House. When Allen's son owned the house in 1676, it was taken over and occupied by seventy followers of Nathaniel Bacon, during the so-called Bacon's Rebellion against the colonial governor. Because of that occupation, the house was eventually known as Bacon's Castle.
