Councilor James Johnson

James Johnson, a member of the Rappahannock tribal council, poses for this portrait while visiting a Nanticoke powwow in Delaware in 1925. He is dressed in a feathered headdress and buckskin, a style of clothing typical not of Virginia Indians but of the Plains Indian tribes.

The photographer Frederick "Fred" Johnson, of Massachusetts, was a student of the famed anthropologist Frank G. Speck at the University of Pennsylvania. As an anthropologist, archaeologist, linguist, and photographer, he studied American Indians in the estern United States and Canada.
