Visitors to Future Site of the Shenandoah National Park

Guests from the nearby Black Rock Springs Hotel pose on land that would become part of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. While the area was known to some travelers, often Washington-area tourists seeking adventure in the outdoors, it was primarily occupied by subsistence farmers. At the time of the creation of the park, about 500 families were living within its proposed limits.
