Misidentified Mary Bowser Photograph

Mary Bowser is the subject of this cabinet-card photograph made by C. R. Rees in Petersburg in 1900. Researchers initially confused this woman with Mary Richards Bowser (fl. 1846–1867), who worked for Elizabeth Van Lew in Richmond and served as a Union spy during the Civil War.
