William Mayo’s Surveying Instruments

This photograph shows the brass surveying instruments William Mayo used in 1737 to lay out the town of Richmond for his patron William Byrd II. Mayo was born in England and immigrated to Virginia in 1723. The protractor at upper left bears the inscription, "Tho Wright Maker to Her Majesty," indicating that the instrument was probably made in England.
