Carrie and Emma Buck

Carrie Buck sits with her mother, Emma Buck, on the grounds of the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feeble-Minded in Madison Heights, near Lynchburg. This photograph was taken in November 1924 by Arthur H. Estabrook, a eugenics researcher who interviewed the two women before testifying in a legal case that resulted in the forced sterilization of Carrie Buck.
