Application for Marriage License
An application for a wedding license issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics in the mid-1920s requires information about the applicant's criminal, mental, and physical history. In addition, the bride and groom must declare their race as "white, colored or mixed." The bottom of the form notes that, in accordance with a provision of the Act to Preserve Racial Integrity, passed in 1924, a "white person … is one with no trace whatsoever of colored blood."
