Cover of Jedediah Hotchkiss’s Sketchbook

This is the marble-board cover of a sketchbook that belonged to Jedediah Hotchkiss, a Confederate topographical engineer with the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Hotchkiss filled the interior pages of the sketchbook with handwritten notes and drawings detailing Confederate troop positions and engagements with Union troops during 1864 and 1865. A paper affixed to the cover indicates that if the sketchbook were misplaced, it should be returned to "Jed. Hotchkiss, Staunton, Virginia."
