Virginia Lunatic Asylum at Williamsburg, Va.

A circa-1845 lithograph depicts well-dressed men and women strolling on the grounds in front of the asylum in Williamsburg. Officially called the Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds, the structure was built in the 1770s and was the first public building in North America dedicated to the care of the mentally ill.
