Before Freedom Came

An ivory bust of a former slave graces the cover of a book that accompanied a 1991 exhibition concerning slavery that was organized at the Museum of the Confederacy, now The American Civil War Museum. The NEH-sponsored exhibition and book project, Before Freedom Came: African-American Life in the Antebellum South, drew international acclaim and resulted in the museum's highest visitation. The woman portrayed in the sculpture was a 23-year-old newly-freed slave named Nora August; an unidentified Union soldier carved the bust in 1865.
