First African American Women Voters in Ettrick, Virginia

The first African American women to vote in Ettrick pose for a photograph in 1920. Virginia State University, a historically black public land-grant university, is located in Ettrick. All of these women were on the faculty of the university. Pictured in the first row, left to right, are Mary Branch, Anna Lindsay, Edna Colson, Edwina Wright, Johnella Frazer (Jackson), and Nannie Nichols. In the back row, left to right, are Eva Conner, Evie Carpenter (Spencer), and Odelle Green.
