Mrs. Thomas M. Randolph, (Martha Jefferson.)

In this three-quarter-length engraving, Martha Jefferson Randolph, the eldest child of Thomas Jefferson and Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson, poses in front of a distant landscape and holds a rose in one hand. According to the caption beneath the image, this engraving was based on an earlier portrait by the artist Thomas Sully. Martha Randolph, her husband Thomas Mann Randolph, and their eleven surviving children lived at Monticello with Thomas Jefferson before his death in 1826. After Jefferson died, the Randolphs were forced to sell the estate because of debts.
