Certificate from Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute

An August 22, 1884, certificate attests that William H. F. Layton attended four weeks of a summer program for teachers conducted at the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute (later Virginia State University) in Petersburg. The certificate was signed by school principal James Storum and state superintendent of public instruction R. R. Farr.
