Headquarters of the U.S. Christian Commission in Richmond

A large group of men, women, and children—a number of them African Americans in Union uniforms—stand in front of the Richmond headquarters of the U.S. Christian Commission, an organization devoted to offering spiritual comfort and supplies to soldiers and sailors during the Civil War. This photograph was taken by an unknown photographer in April 1865, after city had fallen to Union troops.
