Official Program, Woman Suffrage Procession

In March of 1913, suffragists from around the world congregated in Washington, D.C., to march down Pennsylvania Avenue. State delegations, including Virginia's, joined with representatives from nations that had already given women the right to vote. Notably, no southern black women were included as marchers, although northern women such as Ida Wells-Barnett participated. Pictured here is the cover of the official program of the procession, which features a drawing of lawyer Inez Milholland Boissevain leading the march atop a white horse. Boissevain, a Brooklyn-born suffragist and activist, did in fact lead the march in white robes on a large white horse.
