“Elegy”,Library of Virginia,Wednesday
A long poem entitled "Elegy" appears on the front page of the May 20, 1775 edition of John Dixon and William Hunter's Virginia Gazette. Written by Robert Bolling, the poem commemorates the Virginia militiamen who died at the Battle of Point Pleasant the previous October during Dunmore's War. A prolific writer, Bolling published more poetry than any other colonial American between 1759 and his death in 1775.
