Governor Holton Escorts His Daughter To High School

Governor A. Linwood Holton (left), along with Major A. P. Tucker of the capitol police (right), escort Holton's daughter, Tayloe, into the predominantly African American John F. Kennedy High School in Richmond on the first day of school in the fall of 1970. At a time when the court-ordered push for public school desegregation forced Richmond to turn to a citywide busing system, Holton hoped to counter the lingering images of statewide Massive Resistance.
