The Knights of the Horse-Shoe; A Traditionary Tale of the Cocked Hat Gentry in the Old Dominion

The cover of William Alexander Caruthers's novel The Knights of the Horse-Shoe; A Traditionary Tale of the Cocked Hat Gentry in the Old Dominion (1845) features a horseshoe inscribed with the Latin phrase Sic juvat transcendero montes (Thus the young man crosses the mountains). The novel, based on Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood's 1716 expedition to the Blue Ridge Mountains, had been published in serial form in 1841 under the title The Knights of the Golden Horse-Shoe.
