William Anne Keppel, Second Earl of Albemarle
William Anne Keppel, second earl of Albemarle, is draped in a crimson and gold cloak in this contemporary portrait attributed to the English artist Charles Philips. Keppel served as governor of Virginia from 1737 until his death in 1754, though he never actually went to America; in his absence, lieutenant governors administered the government in Williamsburg.
