Members Grant’s Staff at City Point

Members of Union general-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant's staff are pictured at City Point, Virginia, a shipping and railroad nexus strategically located at a site overlooking both the James and the Appomattox rivers. City Point became the central supply and command post for General Grant's campaign to encircle Robert E. Lee's army in Petersburg, a siege that lasted nearly ten months.
