J. L. M. Curry

Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry, an Alabama member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1857 to 1861, is the subject of this half-length portrait published in McClees’ Gallery of Photographic Portraits of the Senators, Representatives & Delegates of the Thirty-fifth Congress (1859). Beneath the image is a facsimile of Curry's signature. Curry went on to become a Confederate officer, and, after the war, a diplomat and an educational reformer. Curry worked to improve schools across the South and to expand public education for African Americans. The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia is named after him.
