Julia Gardiner Tyler

Julia Gardiner Tyler, second wife of President John Tyler, is the subject of this oil portrait by Francesco Anelli. Julia Tyler married the widowed president on June 16, 1844, when she was twenty-four years old; he was thirty years older than she. An inscription on the back of the painting reads, "Mrs. Giulia Gardiner Tyler / in her 26 year / By F. Anelli- 1848." The White House Historical Society dates this painting to the years between 1846, when Tyler was twenty-six years old, and 1848, when the artist completed the work.
