The People, against Official Dictation

A campaign broadside touts Whig candidates running in the 1836 presidential election: Hugh Lawson White of Tennessee, the presidential candidate described as "A Republican of the Old Virginia School"; and John Tyler of Virginia, the vice-presidential candidate characterized as "That tried Republican Statesman and Patriot." The Whig party offered three different slates of candidates that election, thereby dividing the vote and enabling the Democratic candidate, Martin Van Buren, to win the election.
