In this hand-colored tintype, an unidentified Black soldier wears a Union uniform and holds a revolver in one hand and a musket in the other. The soldier stands in front of a painted backdrop that features cannons, ammunition, and the American flag. This portrait was made by Enoch Long, who photographed at Benton Barracks in Saint Louis, Missouri. The image is part of the Liljenquist Family Collection of Civil War photographs at the Library of Congress.
