Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest (Between 1880 and 1920)

Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest is the subject of this oval portrait that is part of the Brady-Handy Photograph Collection at the Library of Congress. Forrest allowed troops under his command to execute hundreds of surrendering Union troops, most of them black, at Fort Pillow in Tennessee. He later became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
