24th Regt. U. S. Colored Troops: Let Soldiers in War, Be Citizens in Peace.

This circa 1865 illustration depicts a Black soldier from the 24th Regiment United States Colored Troops who has put aside his rifle and stands atop a hill reaching towards the sky where the Latin phrase Fiat Justitia ("Let Justice be Done") is inscribed. Presumably, this oval-shaped image was created in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, when Black veterans who had fought for the United States hoped for justice. The motto for the 24th Regiment, "Let Soldiers in War be Citizens in Peace," surrounds the top of the image.
