Ebenezer Baptist Church
This twentieth-century photograph shows the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Richmond's Jackson Ward neighborhood. The original structure, built in 1873, included a steeple; that feature was removed in the early 1900s, when Richmond's building inspector ordered all church spires to be removed or repaired. Charles T. Russell, the first African American architect to practice in Richmond, remodeled Ebenezer Baptist and installed a distinctive cupola with four spires.
