Mary Church Terrell

Mary Church Terrell, an educator, a civil rights activist, and the founder of the National Association of Colored Women, is the subject of this three-quarter-length photographic portrait. A native of Tennessee and a graduate of Oberlin College who continued her studies in Europe, Terrell was considered by many to be the best educated African American woman in the United States during her lifetime.
