Map of the Battle of New Market
This map shows the movements of Confederate troops (in red) under John C. Breckinridge and Union troops (in blue) under Franz Sigel during the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. With two brigades of infantry, some cavalry, and a couple of hundred cadets from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Breckinridge confronted Union forces at the village of New Market in Virginia. Sigel and his men were forced to retreat across the Shenandoah River, burning the bridge behind them.
