Tobacco Workers

African American tobacco workers, all of them women, pose in front of the American Tobacco Company factory in Richmond. Behind the group, on the far left, several white men stand on steps leading to the managerial offices. The sign above the main doorway describes the building as the "Richmond Stemmery," a factory where workers stripped tobacco leaves. The image was made by an unknown photographer, probably late in the nineteenth century.
