Artifacts from Slave Quarters at Poplar Forest
Artifacts unearthed during archaeological excavations at an antebellum slave quarters site at Poplar Forest include animal bones, buttons, pieces of ceramic, bottles, a key hole, and other items. Findings such as these are helping archaeologists reconstruct what daily life was like for enslaved people at Thomas Jefferson's rural retreat in Bedford County, including their dietary and hunting patterns, as well as the material-culture items they used.
