A bespectackled Carrie Victoria Dyer, cofounder of Hartshorn Memorial College, a Black women's college in Richmond, is the subject of this late nineteenth-century photographic portrait. Dyer first served as principal of the college and later became dean. The women's college eventually merged with Virginia Union University.
