Man Tending Tobacco

A detail from an illustrated page made in the mid-nineteenth century by Lewis Miller depicts an enslaved man in Virginia tending to a tobacco plant. Miller, a native of Pennsylvania, traveled extensively in Virginia and painted what he saw. Some of his watercolors include rare depictions of enslaved people in Virginia.
