Abigail Smith Adams (Mrs. John Adams)

Abigail Smith Adams, wife of U.S. president John Adams, is the subject of this portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The painting was begun in 1800, when Abigail Adams was fifty-six years old and her husband was still in office. The portrait was not completed, however, until 1815, leading John Quincy Adams, her son and the future sixth president of the United States, to complain, "Mr. Stuart thinks it the prerogative of genius to disdain the performance of his engagements."
