Main Street in Lexington, Virginia
A horse-drawn cart, with a dog tagging alongside it, proceeds up Main Street in this view of Lexington, Virginia, taken shortly after the Civil War. The Shenandoah Valley town was home to the Virginia Military Institute and Washington College (later Washington and Lee University). A three-story brick hotel can be seen on the right side of the street; in the distance, the ruins of the VMI Barracks, extensively damaged during a Union raid by General David Hunter in June 1864, are visible.
