607 Oronoco Street

This is 607 Oronoco Street in Alexandria. John Potts Jr., the first secretary of the Potomac Canal Company, built the Federal-style house in 1795. Within two years, William Fitzhugh of Chatham, a wealthy politician with a large amount of property in Fairfax County, had moved into the townhouse with his family. In 1811 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee moved into the house, and in 1820, after a few more moves, his widow Anne Hill Lee returned there. Young Robert E. Lee lived in this house prior to entering the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, which led to the Lee-Jackson Foundation turning the historic home into a museum from 1967 to 2000. The house is currently a private residence.
