Sabres, Saddles, and Spurs

Hand-to-hand combat is featured on the cover of Sabres, Saddles, and Spurs (1998), a book based on the field diary kept by Confederate cavalry officer William R. Carter. Carter wrote about his experiences riding with Confederate general J. E. B. Stuart, which became a boon to researchers after the Civil War; nonetheless, Carter's compelling observations did not appear in print until 1998, when this edited version of a portion of his diary was finally published.
