Thomas Nelson Conrad
This lithograph is a portrait of Thomas Nelson Conrad of the 1857 graduating class of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The college hired the Philadelphia firm of L. N. Rosenthal Lithographic to create portraits of the faculty and graduating students. The images were then bound in a kind of yearbook for the students. During the Civil War Conrad became a Confederate spy, and in 1882 he was appointed president of Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (later Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University).
