Francis Howard, baron Howard of Effingham, is the subject of this 1877 portrait, which is part of the Commonwealth of Virginia's art collection. The artist, William Ludwell Sheppard, copied an earlier work by artist Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723), the most important portraitist of his time in England, who served as official painter at the royal court.
