Flag of the Botetourt Dragoons (Obverse)

A silk flag presented to the Botetourt Dragoons, a militia unit organized in Botetourt County, bears an oil-painted seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia that includes the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis, or "thus always to tyrants." This flag was presented to the unit by the women of Botetourt County. Gold-painted inscriptions on the reverse side of the flag quote Patrick Henry— "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death"— and note that the unit was "Organized Jan 9th 1860." The Botetourt Dragoons became Company C of the 2nd Regiment Virginia Cavalry.
