Precolonial Indian Settlement
This is a modern rendering of an Indian settlement in Southwest Virginia near Pisgah that dates to between ca. AD 1400 and 1600. Excavations in the 1970s at that location, known as the Crab Orchard Archaeological Site, uncovered evidence that the town featured houses with central hearths, a surrounding palisade, or tall wooden wall, and an irregularly shaped semi-subterranean structure outside of the enclosure.
