A detailed topographical map from 1863 shows the existing roads, railroad lines, and farms in the area around Petersburg, as well as the defenses that were set up to protect the city. A key at the bottom lists the exact location of fifty-five artillery batteries that had been created as part of the Dimmock Line of fortifications around the city. The number of artillery guns in each battery is also included, as well as the overall total, which was 352.
