Oath of Allegiance

A Union military form issued by the Department of Virginia and North Carolina states that on April 16, 1864, Ann G. Parker of Northampton County swore allegiance to the United States. The Department of Virginia and North Carolina controlled Union-occupied territory in the Confederate states and established restrictions on the civilian population. A number of civilians were arrested as "political prisoners"; others were forced to sign loyalty oaths such as this one.
