Miniature Portrait of George Washington

George Washington is the subject of this miniature portrait made in 1776 by Charles Willson Peale. The watercolor-on-ivory miniature, which measures two by one-and-a-half inches, is in an oval gold case. Martha Washington, who commissioned the portrait, could either hold it in the palm of her hand or wear it around her neck when she and her husband were separated during the American Revolution.
