Community School Plan No. 1

These architectural drawings show the exterior design and floor plan for a one-teacher Rosenwald school. In the 1920s Samuel L. Smith, program director of the Rosenwald Fund, created blueprints for schools of varying sizes (the number of teachers at each school ranged from one to seven); he also designed ancillary structures, including cottages where teachers could live, privies, and industrial buildings. The Rosenwald Fund published a series of these architectural renderings under the title Community School Plans; the book remained in print, with some revisions, into the 1940s.
