Dudley Digges House, Williamsburg

The Dudley Digges house in Williamsburg, seen here in this late nineteenth-century photograph, was used as a school to teach enslaved and free Black children from 1760 to 1774 by the Associates of Dr. Bray, an English philanthropic group dedicated to the education and conversion of enslaved Black people. In 2020 researchers from William & Mary confirmed that the house, which had been moved from its original location in around 1930, was the building that had housed the Bray School. The structure was moved into the Colonial Williamsburg historic area in 2023 as part of a multi-year restoration project.
